ubuntu 11.04 vga out problem!

Hi all, i am new to linux and loving it tbh

My only problem is haing just installed it on my laptop i cannot for the life of me work out how to get the display to show up on my monitor,

Wouldnt be a problem but the screen on my laptop is starting to crap out and i would like to be able to just plug my monitor lead in and use that instead, like i used to with windows! I am sure there is a simple way but i dont know it, ive not really used the terminal tho so i dont know if something is in there!

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

its an adent 5401, when i press the button that normally switches to vga out it does nothing, im stumped!
