Thought I'd give Linux/Ubuntu a go as I've never seen it in action, semi-successfully installed on a VM but although the login screen displays fine and prompts for the username & password I specified during the VM creation wizard, all I see is the Ubuntu desktop background having logged in.
It's obviously some sort of display error as I can see flickering blanks on the left and top of the screen where toolbars would be. If I right click then I get options as you'd expect, it just won't show the desktop properly. I've allocated the VM enough RAM (512MB which I know is the minimum but I've got Win7 VM's running with that much, and I've tried upping to 1GB with no change). I know literally nothing about Linux and their forums have baffled me... any ideas? See below screenshots
