Ubuntu 6.06 LTS Released

I've burnt CD's ISO's to DVD before through Nero, but I've uninstalled that and I need a free program that will burn an ISO to a DVD, anyone have suggestions?

Just tried PLexTools but all that did was burn the ISO, as an ISO to my DVD and not actually extract it to the DVD as individual files and folders if you know what I mean

Never done it in windows but it works fine with Gnomebaker or k3B. Just select burn DVD image and point to your iso.

Installed 6.06 tonight and below is my mini review:

Installed in 10 minutes straight from a Live CD boot.
Found all my hardware including wireless at the initial boot.
Ran Automatix script and installed loads of extras.
It absolutely flies along (1.4 Celeron M, 512 ram, Intel onboard 64 meg graphics)

This release and distro gets a full 10/10 from me.

To conclude this comprehensive review, freaking sweet! :D

Bleh! No sound for me. X-Fi won't be supported under Linux until Q2 2007 according to Creative.

edit - good old onboard sound and manual cable switching will save the day. :)

I tried to update via sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade.

I thought all was good but when i rebooted it now wont load and gives me horrible g-streamer errors. :(

It gives me the command line though so will trying again help ?

I have to be careful as im dual booting and cant afford to lose any of the windows data. :(

bleh tried this last night as it's been a while since I've used Linux and fancied trying a new distro.

Didn't even get as far as installing because X couldn't start, I then gave up and went to bed :p

Is ATI support still bad on Linux?

Same here. :(

I had to install with the 2nd option down (safe graphics mode?) because if I chose the top one everything would stop just before loading the desktop.

Anyway, it installed fine but I can't change resolution and my refresh rate is stuck @60Hz. I'm sniffing around www.ubuntuforums.org to try to find a solution, but haven't found anything that works for me so far.

Ah I tried the second option and had no luck with that either, I'll have a proper go this evening but it's a tad frustrating :(

If your refresh rate sucks (and it won't let you go higher), firstly find the specs for your monitor (google or otherwise), specifically the horizontal and vertical refresh rates (these should be ranges like 50 - 70).

Then type:

Code:
gksudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Scroll down to "Section "Monitor"", and just edit the Horizsync and VertRefresh values to the ones for your monitor.

Reboot and all should be fine and none-eye killing :D

That'll give you the recommended resolution for your screen (if you want it different then it's just System > Preferences > Screen Resolution).

I tried that (and what seems like 17,745 other things this afternoon) and I still can't alter the resolution or refresh rate. :(

It just kept stalling at installation, it went through all the regionlisation and timezone screens and then just froze. With 5 it all worked wonderfully on my little Thinkpad, but the earlier release of 6 just stopped, I left it for about 20 mins and nothing happened. I am hoping it was just one of those little bugs that has been ironed out now. It is a test 'puter anyway so it is no trouble trying out a new release.
Exactly what I'm having atm :( Just began installing it, but it freezes just after the timezone/keyboard support screens. Early days still so I'm looking at why it's happening/

Where are you lot getting the DVD releases from?
They arnt listed on the Ubuntu website yet.

Whats the difference between the Desktop & Server CD ISOs anyway. Is it just that the server version has less general apps and has more server/networking apps?

Yes.
But if you goto the Ubuntu website, there are some A64 specific versions.
Although from what ive heard, its better to stick with the i386 ones, because of some software incompatibilites with the A64 version.

Thanks for this post, i never tried linux before so thought id give this one a go, i ran it on my old laptop, must say im very impressed with it.

Only niggle though is i cant seem to get my netgear wg511 v3 pc card to work so having to use a cat5 cable, but apart from that its lovely :)
