Ubuntu 8.04 Released

Downloaded this, installed but still getting network errors (cannot get IP and shutdown errors relating to network) and grub error 14 when trying to boot. Not good, especially when all previous versions worked perfectly on the same hardware.

I'm posting from it now !

Might be a stupid question but I created 2 partitions. One is the swap and the other is '\'. If I format '\' as ReiserFS then the GRUB bootloader install fails with a fatal error. But if I use Extfs3 then it will install properly and the system boots.

Been a while since I dabbled with Linux so I may be missing something obvious.

You need both of those partitions at least. Grub doesn't get along with some filesystems. I installed a system with an xfs root partition yesterday and the (alternate) installer told be that Grub doesn't like when /boot is on an xfs partition. It asked me if I wanted to use Lilo instead. I did and all is good.

I don't know if Grub has problems with reiser or not. In the future if you want to use a different filesystem with grub, place /boot on a small partition, a few dozen megabytes should do the trick really, formatted as ext2 or ext3 and put everything else on filesystems you prefer.

I've used ReiserFS as boot partition with grub without issue on 6.06 and 7.10, will be giving 8.04 a go as soon as it's downloaded (although I don't think 'soon' is appropriate :().

still got problems with 64-bit flash and firefox 3, guess it's back to 32-bit firefox 2.0.14 for me, that works. runs nice on this server (Amd x64 3800+ x2, 1 gig, sata raid etc. etc.)
kde 4 sucks though as this gfx card ain't good enough, it's a Ti4200 64mb on agp

I'm not even convinced that after I've told the partitioner which partitions I want to use it even formats the chosen one as ResierFS although I suppose it must. Can't be bothered trying it again and I'll stick with what I have as it works and I only dabble with it anyway.

Well the update completed satisfactorily. I had to go to work immediately after ( I work nights) so was unable to test drive it.

I did notice on its reboot that certain "crapout-requesters" popped up.. One for "SkyRocket" ? Didn't even know I had that installed !! (What is it?)

It cured my self inflicted email password verification issue.
I had installed Snort but got pee'ed off with the verification message in evolution so uninstalled it. But the requester never went away.

I never bothered with dpkg -r snort coz I figured this update will probably bork anyway meaning a fresh reinstall.

Ok.. The access to my NTFS drives works as it should, Bringing up the permissions req the first time access is required and never again thereafter, even after reboot.

What else ?
Oh yeah.. It now has Firefox 3 as default but has strangely kept firefox 2 in the Applications/Internet dir. It works too.

Boincs has found itself moved from Applications/Internet to applications/System Tools ?

Everything else seems to work ok.
On initial reboot after update had finish it I had to click on restricted drivers icon again as it had put a newer driver in there but any whizz-bang effects are still missing from this system.

Blame the X700 pcie card, I assume Coz the Mobility ati works on my mates laptop with Ubuntu 8:04......

Oh.. and where's Glipper gone ?

The weekend is looming so I'm gonna kick off a download tonight (damn you, Virgin Media and your stupid bandwidth throttling!) and hopefully install this on Saturday afternoon.

Currently using Xubuntu Gutsy 32-bit... think I might give the 64-bit a whirl as I've now got 4GB of RAM. I assume this means a fresh install as I can't upgrade from 32-bit to 64-bit as I would 32-bit to 32-bit....?

I got a free copy of Vista (Ultimate Business thingymajig) from Microsoft when I was at InfoSec on Wednesday that I've not yet installed. But I think that's gonna have to wait a while longer as I'm looking forward to checking out Hardy much more than I am another version of Windows. :D

hey guys, i'll be trying the linux for the 1st time and as it was advised to me i waited till this comes out, i'll be installing it with my bro next week as he's been using linux for bout 10years.
anyways i downloaded the 64bit version or do you think i should get 32bit as it would be 1st 64bit for my bro and get that going/learned b4 i move to 64?
cheers

The differences nowadays with Ubuntu's plugin trickery is really minimal. Try either one.

If it really comes down to it there are scripts out there that download and automatically install 32-bit Firefox to alleviate some hassles.

I can't boot from the CD for some reason-CD drive is set to the top of my list in the BIOS, and it has worked in the past without a problem, but it seems to be refusing to at the moment. Any ideas?
