Ubuntu 8.04 Released

First time I've ever used Linux properly. I've mucked about with some old Distros on College computers.

So, about an hour ago I bit the bullet and DL'd the 64bit version and did the easy installation option and install from Wubi. Amazing piece of software that is.

Really enjoying the desktop, and the feel of things. Seems much smoother than the Windows counterpart. No doubt I will still use Windows for games and odds and sods, but for general browsing and music, this takes the biscuit.

Heh, this reminds me of a t-shirt on thinkgeek which says

"Linux, il y a moins bien mais c'est plus cher"

(Linux, there's worse but it's more expensive)

What does everyone think of the Font rendering? Not specific to Ubuntu but also applies to all Linux distributions!!!

I have 8.04 64 bit version installed on my laptop and amazingly my wireless is detected and working no problem and seems to be running fine, however I have to say the fonts look more professional in Windows. Are there some settings I have not enabled? I have it set in appearance for the lcd option.

The default fonts used in Linux is different from Windows. It's because we are so used to Windows I suppose. But you can change the fonts so you could set them to what ever windows uses. I would point out how to change them but I'm not in Ubuntu at the mo.

Yes I know where to change the fonts used, but I have always had this problem when I have used Linux over the years, and it is always the reason that I eventually return to using Windows. I had a similar problem with OS X. It just seems like a lot of work to get the fonts looking really slick!!!

However I am going to give it a bit longer and see if I get used to it over time.

New to linux so not sure what that means. But going to take a guess and say update from disc?

Just click on system/administration and select update manager.

it will report no updates found

It's telling Porkies.. Click "Check" and it will ask for your password and then check the repositories.

I just checked my beta 8:04 install on the test machine and it's up to date.

Yep that's what I did. Nice. All up to date then :)

Going back to the issue of fonts, if you have a license for Windows then you can use the Microsoft fonts under Linux without breaking any license agreements. Off the top of my head it's as simple as running these 2 commands:

sudo apt-get install msttcorefonts

followed by

sudo fc-cache -fv

Argh!
My 3 attempts to download 8.04 had failed on me. First time last night (overnight), it downloaded 280MB and it was "completed" according to Firefox, via Kent Uni Mirror. Second was from Oxford Server this morning, downloaded 560MB and it again was "completed". The last one failed again from Virgin, after 28mb.

I'm running with a 512kbps ADSL (can't get any faster unfortunately), hours wasted:(

I've placed an order for a CD now, might torrent it overnight tonight - perhaps that's a better source than mirrors. I really wanna give this a go...
