Ubuntu 8.04 stuck at bootup

I haven't changed anything recently and for some reason Ubuntu 8.04 is getting stuck at the 'loading local startup scripts'. The screen flashes a few times, like it's attempting to do something... then nothing...!

I can freely type on the screen while it's apparently doing 'nothing' - any ideas?

I can get into 'safe mode', so any suggestions appreciated

nevermind, sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg saved the day.
