Ubuntu and a Graphic Card

I think this is an Ubuntu issue but it could be hardware or a bios setting .

I've got a Zotac Ion mobo that runs Ubuntu . I'm trying to install a graphic card , an ATI Radeon X1300 ( I think ) .

All runs fine on the internal graphic but if I plug in the card I get the Zotac splash screen and can enter bios but as soon as I leave bios the screen goes blank and nothing else seems to happen .

The only setting I can find in the bios that seems relevant ( bear in mind I don't know much ) is in the Southbridge Config .

It's - iGPU and Ext-VGA Selection :

i get two choices the default setting - Disable iGPU if external VGA card exists .

and

Both exisit and iGPU by frame rate buffer .... If I select this one of two things happens .

With no graphic card in place the pc boots into Ubuntu fine on the internal graphic .

Or

With the card installed Ubuntu boots to a black screen with white text that reads as follows:

Ubuntu 10.10 PC2 tty1
Login :
Password :

PC2 is the pc's name in Ubuntu .

if I type my username and password it just comes up with not recognised and asks for login in again .

It's this bit that makes me think it an Ubuntu issue .

Any ideas :)

Should say .... complete Linux noob here :) ( if that wasn't obvious )

No I've not installed the ATi drivers .... I did read up on installing them as it seemed a good starting point but tbh got lost very quickly on reading through the instructions .

I 'thought' that if the Ati drivers weren't installed Ubuntu would use the open source ones and install them automatically ??

Not quite sure what a binary driver is compared to a normal (?) one . But from memory looking last night there is some sort of nvidia driver showing as installed in the hardware drivers tab .... will this be it ?

So , unistall it and reboot with the ATi card in ?

Hhhmm just tried to unistall the driver with "sudo sh NVIDIA* --uninstall"

It says "sh: Can't open NVIDIA*"

Under the Additional Drivers Tab it gives me an option to Remove , would this work ?

Or from reading the manual linked would Jockey be better ?

Or ??

Just tried "sudo apt-get remove -nvidia-*"

It came back with "E: Command line option ‘n’ [from -nvidia-*] is not known."

I'll give the Remove option a go .

Did wonder if I should give you a minute to reply there :)

But not to worry the Remove option has worked and it's up and running on the card :D

Thanks for your help !
