I've a huge noob with Linux, I just install the above and usually it 'works' fine

But I've got a sound issue with the laptop above, I tried a few things that I read online, and nothing helped

So I'm about to do a fresh format, and then ask you guys what I should do.

Parted Magic 5.5 System Information lists the audio device as..

Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family High Defenition Audio Controller

The problem that I get is hugely distorted sound, it sounds really nasty and even the startup sound is ghastly (I can film it if this helps?)

Any help appreciated, installing Ubuntu 10.4 again now, so will have a fresh system to play with

Try this perhaps?

http://www.ehow.com/how_5845168_change-audio-drivers-linux.html

  • Go to "System > Administration > Synaptics Package Manager." In the Package Manager search box, type "gnome-alsamixer." ALSA is an audio driver that accesses your sound card and allows for more input and output options.
  • Right-click on the box to the left and select "Mark for installation." Accept the other components to be installed and click "Apply." This will install the ALSA architecture mixing controls on your system.
  • Go to "System > Sound and Video" and open GNOME ALSA Mixer. You will see all of the hardware associated with your sound card, but it is now controlled by ALSA instead of PulseAudio, Ubuntu's default audio driver.

had a similiar problem on my laptop

Tried for hours to fix it.. in the end it was a simple case of

click on the speaker icon in the top tool bar
click sound preferences
and the top slider bar was well over the 100% mark and producing diistorted sound

GRRRRRRRR

simple but might be worth checking? :)

PS I'm using the ALSA plug-in
