Has anyone managed to get Ubuntu 11.10 working with sound as a guest OS on VMWare Player or Workstation at all?

I've tried the Analog Stereo Output setting and the sound hardware device is detected as ES1371, but no joy at all. :(

I'd really appreciate it if anyone could shed some light on why this won't work!

Thanks

Ive had nothing but problems using VMware full virtualization software on Linux. Virtualbox does it all for me, just make sure you get the right one - one is cr@p (think its OSE?).

To be honest, the sound on Linux VMWare issue seems to be a very common one. I did lots of googling and it seems to have been going on for ages, so it sounds like VMWare can't be bothered to fix it.

The only attraction VMWare has to me is that its 3D accelleration is MUCH better according to benchmarks (handy for playing older games)

BTW what is with this GUI (Unity?) I was left scratching my head for a while thinking "where the **** is the terminal!!!!" until I managed to find it
