Ubuntu Broken Down

My unbuntu has stopped functioning, i turned it off last night, tried to boot up today and i get an error somthng about failed checks. Is there any way i can fix this? ive tries reinstalling unbuntu but the boot disc now keeps crashing when i select my keyboard settings.

What exactly is the error given?

It's like calling your mechanic, telling him your car's been making a funny clunk sound, then asking what's wrong with the car. He can't tell you unless khe knows more about the sound.

Sounds like the disk check it does every ~20 boots is failing?

ive only booted it about 6 times, i try and boot it it does the usual think until the ubuntu screen where it has the loading bar, it suddenly stops half way through with a load of script and sonthing next to it saying [fail] it says somthing about scans.

Queer, why don't you tell us exactly what the error says and then it may be possible to diagnose it?

maybe your harddrive has failed?

maybe it is quite old

Got a LiveCD handy? You could always scan the drive for errors using that.

yep tried it and it detected an error, i shall post a picture soon, i think my installation disc may be damaged ill need to burn a new one.

Check you hard disk manufacturer's web site for diagnostic utilities from which you can boot. Most of the big manufacturers have them and they can help you find the faulty component. If the disk is bad it'll tell you so. If the disk is OK you can look for other causes like a bad installation disk or a corrupt installation.

Bear in mind that with the weather we've been having over the last couple of days, it's prime season for overheating.
