ubuntu: can't log in

installed ubuntu 7.10 last night but i can't log into any forums it says username and password is invalid. i can get into hotmail fine though. using firefox.

sounds stupid, but do you have the correct keyboard layout selected. could be messing up your passwords if you have it mapped out wrong?

i thought that so i typed the password in browser and it was ok

on a more serious note, I had this issue. A re-install of firefox seemed to clear it up for me.

someone else reccommended uninstalling the latest update and deleting the cookies and cache but didn't get a chance last night to check. will post back

i re-installed ubuntu last night so the lay out on the hard disk is..

C: - vista
D: & E: - i set ubuntu to guided installation so i assume it installed these other 2 partitions.

both o/s' boot fine but i've got more problems with ubuntu, firstly when i ran the updates it said there was none even though when i installed it before it had 120mb of them to do, firefox still wont let me log into forums and i can't install anything now either. i downloaded amsn onto the desktop and last time i ran "sudo apt-get install amsn" and it was fine but now it keeps saying E: coulnt find package amsn". it does this when i try to install browser plugins too. ive also tried clearing the cache and cookies in firefox with no luck

if you downloaded amsn to the desktop use "sudo dpkg -i <amsn package name>" to install it.

Uncomment the repositories in /etc/apt/sources.list and then run an "apt-get update" to update apt.

apt-cache search <name> will tell you the package name for something you are looking for if you cant guess it.

To remove firefox you can use apt and then reinstall.

ive reinstalled ubuntu and i still cant log in to forums, although i can with the ubuntu forums which i registered for earlier :confused:

Are the passwords stored in your browser or are you entering them each time? If they're stored then check that they're correct by going Edit -> Preferences -> Security -> Show Passwords -> Show Passwords.

they're stored in the browser but ive tried typing them in too. have also cleared all the passwords in the browser
