Uninstall grub from mbr? (edited: ubuntu cd boot menu fails)

hi,

i like the whole open idea behind linux so thought i'd check it out.. however i downloaded the ubuntu amd64 iso, burnt, booted, get to the option to run from cd or install and it displays some wierd box made out of chars |_ etc with a bunch of numbers/code in. pressing a key this clears the screen to a promt.. i guess i'll try again with x86 version, plus remote chance the iso was damaged during dling (?)

was wondering if linux is more fussy with overclocking (should i set bios stuff to default etc) ?

thanks for any help =)

i dled ubuntu and thought i'd try installing (i'd created 10gb partition in windows earlier).. it finished installing, but on reboot the grub dualboot thing didn't work - ubuntu didn't load and neither does xp (sits there with 'starting up...' or something and flashing _ ..anyway, i want out :) i'll try linux on a test box another time.

i have backups of everything on other drive and i'm even willing to fisk /mbr to fix it - the only problem is i don't have a floppy drive (against religion etc) soo i think i either need to get to prompt from xp setup cd (how?) or get my dad/mate to create a bootable cd/dvd with fdisk on... will this work?

oh and xp setup allows me to delete/create partitions but doesn't like any partitions i create on that drive.. setup says 'this disk does not contain a windows xp-compatible partition' ! argh :)

(should this now be moved to windows forum) or can the ubuntu live cd help me out somehow.. and if not,why not?! :)

ung conn timed out typing reply.. short version:
fixed with windows xp + R + fixmbr  :)

but before that i found Mandriva 2007 free on linux format dvd and installed that and played around for a few days and liked that. i'll try linux again over xmas, with mandriva or ubuntu.

sorry it takes days to reply but i'm without net atm! in net cafe
