hey guys, i have installed ubunto on my pc from both a cd and usb stick, all works fine the first time it loads after install, but any time after that i get a flashing error just after all the bios messages.

the flashing message says:

ussplash: setting mode 1152x864 failed
ussplash using mode 1024x768

ubuntu 9.10 james-desktop tty1

james-desktop login:

im using the latest 32 bit version from the offical website

this is my first time using linux, does anyone have any ideas on how i can fix this? thanks for any help

okay type in your password and username

then try this command

sudo start x

that should start up the GUI

tell us what happens
look like the graphics card drivers are failing and u will have to install drivers.

Looks like usplash is trying to load a resolution that won't work, then defaulting to one that might. Usplash - by definition - doesn't use the graphic card driver, but it does use parameters which the renoundly un-reliable ubuntu monitor detection thing may have set, settings which also might be preventing X from starting.

Do you see a white pulsing ubuntu logo at any point?
What is the native resolution of your monitor.

Can you log in with your name and password, then issue this command:
Code:
more /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Show us what it says back (space to move to the next page).
