thanks

It is feasible to use ubuntu as your desktop but I feel you are moving for the wrong reasons.

If you are an avid gamer then you are going to struggle with ubuntu, especially with DX10 games on Vista.

There are some issues with ATi card drivers but I believe ubuntu 7.04 has resolved some of those.

i dont really worry about dx10 at the mo. as i dont have dx10 card , but i have heard about a program called WINE , but dont know what it does? is there any other version of linux that would be more suitable?

Forget gaming in Linux, it's really just good for stable GUI "office" like applications. Take a bit of time researching into installing, it's not as easy to install like Windows (drivers and packages)

I would use dual boot, XP for games, Linux for other things, net, browsing. Check all your hardware is supported, if it isn't then no point installing Linux.

Dual boot XP and Ubuntu. XP for gaming, Ubuntu for everything else. You will love it.
Don't bother messing around with WINE/ Cedega- it's more trouble than its worth.

Dual booting is a very good idea.

You may find that ubuntu isn't for you after a while or that you never use Xp. Either way you can take your time and make up your mind.

Ubuntu is great for managing what is installed on your PC. You just go to add/remove and away you go. You can install / uninstall programs from there.

I know there's a remove programs feature in Windows but it leaves a trail of crap behind.
