Hey all,
With Steam for Linux now available I wanted to get Ubuntu installed on my Gaming Rig and try it out. Well, though the install went without a hitch, I find that I have no audio. I have both the onboard Intel HDA sound and a Creative X-Fi XtremeMusic PCI card and neither work. I have had the Creative card working on my previous rig in the past with Ubuntu but the creative Linux drivers are 5 years out of date and no longer work. There is apparently a bug with the revision 1 version of the z77x-ud5h (fixed in later versions apparently) which stops the sound working through anything but the sub-woofer port at the rear which does not provide the full sound range so is not a work around. Some have reported success using the latest Realtek Driver but I have tried it and it made no difference.
So my real question is can anyone recommend a decent sound card that works flawlessly with Ubuntu and offers virtual surround like the X-Fi XtremeMusic even if that feature is available only in windows. Alternatively a good USB headset which works with Ubuntu and does surround sound might also be an option.
