Behind you... Naked!
I may be way off here, I mostly prefer KDE but recently I have been toying with various ubuntu flavours.

I have had ubuntu and xubuntu on my laptop recently and I have noticed that they look exactly the same, but the gnome ubuntu is a brown theme while the xubuntus xfce desktop is a silver / grey theme, but other than that they are the same.

I haev not actually compared them to be honest, its more that I just happened to notice it as Im going through them.

Can anyone add anythign to this as to why XFCE and GNOME are so identical ( or is ubuntu running XFCE too? - I remember gnome being much better than this Im sure )

So, given a choice then, one user might be just as well to not bother with ubuntu but opt for Xubuntu instead, especailly if using a less than the latest hardware?

Ok, thanks for that.

You can either go straight to Xubuntu (which is what I do) but even if you've got Ubuntu installed it's very easy to install xfce and get it to use that instead of Gnome.

No, I prefer KDE, its just a kind of passing thought.

Mainly I suppose because I have a mate, who swears by ubuntu, and has it and nothing else installed, and so, I thought I would give it a shot, and I noticed that xfce and gnome looked the same ( From a passing view as I said ).

Personally, I have also recently founf that OpenGEU used to be Gubuntu and is Enlightenment based... I love Enlightenment and would have loved to go down that path, but I found it slower than KDE so Im not bothering with it which is such a shame, but there you go!

Elive is Debian with enlightenment. It ran fine on my xp2600 based computer, Their irc room was brilliant when I used it. Bunch of really helpful guys who would help even at silly times of the night

I have never got on with Debian... EVER!

My early trials with unix never saw such thigns as a GUI other than a basic X in the late 80's but then of course I was at uni and the Atari / Amigas were the babies to have... No one other than mega loaded gits could have a PC.

More recently, I started back with a Mandrake 6.1 box set I picked up for a song and that got me into Linux again for a short time, and I have dipped my toes into it every so often until more recently and I have only gone the RedHat way, or more specifically the Madrake way, and I have never got on with any debian based distros ever... Tried Corel, Storm, and Debian itself but never liked it for no other reason than I hated Gnome...

Now I have moved away from mandrake and gone to source based distros avoiding the debians, but look what Im on now??? Bloody kubuntu and I am loving it???

Go figure?

Saying that, thats on my LapTop. On my No.2 PC Im running Sabayon and thats a real treat to play with, all Compizzed up and visually, its a ****, all tarted up and you cannot help but love it, and of course its now running rock solid and stable as well, so its ajust gorgeous to use not only to stare at. and the LapTop only has S3 Savage graphics ( Should be good enough to run Compiz-fuzion surely? - it plays UT Classic and Quake 2 just fine under Linux FFS )

Anyway Im waffling.

debians? you surely mean debian based? I did try sabayon but found it too bloated gentoo which its based on is much better.

I think its a given that Debians also means debian based.

Yes, I love Gentoo, absolutely love it. My first attempt at it was on an old K6 several years ago... ( I was in my old Flat so its about 7 years ago ) and I had to do everything for the K6 and just getting a KDE Desktop into it at 640x480 took me over a week @ 24/7 compiling... Those were the days.

But, and this is a big but ( Pardon? ), but even though Sabayon is fairly bloated, its still no worse than half a dozen others that I can name, plus, you can easily kill off half the bloat ( Open office is the first to go for me as I have bought and paid for StarOffice and I find Star Office a much better and more stable App than Open Office ) but other than that, there is only a few irritating apps that get in the way.

What I like with Sabayon is that with the Compiz-Fusion junk, it just works perfectly straight from the bag. ( On that system Im running a pair of 6600GTs - well, I dont want to throw them away if they work fine )

I never throw anything away I will need to build a second house to house my stuff by 2020 :p

I'm all for things running "out of the box" but lately I'm getting towards getting things working myself so to cut down on un needed junk. Suppose its me turning into an miser :p

LOL Me too!

I have converted the Attic into a LAN room. I now have 7 PCs that are currently setup in there right now, the kids each have a LapTop in their bedrooms as well as one each of the LAN PCs, The wife has her PC in the our bedroom as well as a LapTop for when she cant be botjhered getting off the couch, I have my main PC here, and I have a metal shed that also has a LapTop and a few desktops, in and I am soon to build a concrete shed at the bottom of the garden ( Awaiting permission ) for more PCs.

In total, I have 18 PCs 12 of them are setup and are on the network, the rest are unplugged but can be setup in a few minutes. but they are lower spec so I dont bother much with them.
