hi,

I just installed Ubuntu and got around to installing the nvidia drivers, the documentation told me to press alt+ctrl and f1 to enter CLI mode, I cant for the life of me figure out how to exit back to desktop and 30mins of googling hasn't helped one bit.

i'm sure it's a very simple answer but finding answers for simple things in linux seems to be like finding a needle in a haystack.

np mate i found out eventually, it's alt+f7.

i installed the nvidia driver following the guide perfectly, but get x-server error on startup, going to put windows back on..... ill give it another try next year...

obviously linux isn't for you if you're going to give up that easily.... :p

i'm a die hard windows fan but i tried ubuntu for the first time at the weekend and not much went right first time for me either. but google (and bit of time) is all you need. :)

yeah i dont have much time to waste, only messing around cos ive had the day off due to floods.

1hr of fannying around v 5 mouse clicks to install a simple video driver, the 5 mouse clicks wins everythime for me, especially when it runs thousands more games. :p

the install procedure was a lot more user friendly than last year when i tried it at least...

^^yup that really should be made clearer from the outset. the amount of guide/tutortials i've seen which blabber on about downloading and installing drivers manually is insane. when i discovered that, it worked first time with my ati x1950pro. no messing.....

and to get a feel of what's ubuntu is like without all the hardware woes is to run it a virtual machine within windows. that's what i did for a few days, decided i liked it and took the plunge and had a go at installing it for real. must admit, i'm cheating by dual booting at the moment - have to because of my games... :D

The only Ubuntu guide you need is here.

That and the official Ubuntu forums are a world of information.

and apt-get install automatix2 for your video card

DON'T DO IT!!!!!... Fubar'd my install when I used it!!!...

Google for 'Envy' and Linux!... its a program that automates the install of ATi and nVidia Drivers and sorts the Server Thing!! for you!

Couldn't you have used the Restricted Drivers Manager in System/Admin?

Hi, I tried that first but it got stuck on boot with x-server error still, so then i re-installed the OS and tried nvidia method and pretty much same result as you can see above.

I might give it another try tomorrow, I was impressed by the UI (very clean) and install process (simple) but the install procedure for the nvidia drivers is quite simply ridiculous.

If it was a replacement for windows i would make more of an attempt to learn how to do this stuff, but i'll need to use windows for 99% of games anyway...
