You don't really need a guide... if you want to dabble then run it as a live session, that way you don't have to install anything.
So, just download the ISO, burn it, boot from the CD and it will run as a live session with an install option on the desktop.

7.04 should have a lot more fixes / improved hardware support over 6.10.

As 6.10 has been out longer (October 2006) there will naturally be more support available, however some of the issues you may have with with 6.10 would most likely have been fixed with 7.04 (April 2007).
