Ubuntu n00b needs some help!

Right so I've installed ubuntu desktop 8.10
but I'm having issues with the system connecting to update/get drives etc.

I've set up my network settings for my network adapter, both in 'network configuration' and in 'network proxy' and I'm typing this in firefox, so I can get online and browse the internet

this is where I'm stumped though, as the OS itself cannot seem to connect.

for example I cannot ping anything in network tools, nor can I update the OS using the 'sudo apt-get update' console commands etc

also i think the network settings get erased when i reboot, am i missing something here too?

Maybe start again tomorrow. The new release 9.04 is out with much improved networking.

Do you have the proper DNS settings listed? Can you ping IP addresses but not domain names?

would that be an ip on the network? or another ip?

Right so i'm now running 9.04, same issue

I can access the internet, and ping all my network addresses, but i cant ping domain names :confused:

so cant use wget commands etc

if its a DNS issue you could try the opendns name servers

208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220.
