Ubuntu Netbook help

Right I am a complete Ubuntu virgin, but I acquired a small Acer one for my son's Christmas present that has it on.

The small voice wants me to install XP but I like the idea of him getting exposure to another OS

So what I need help with is what to put on it. I would like some kind of parental control and Anti virus. Nothing to heavy.

Anyone willing to point me in the right direction
