I have just installed Ubuntu in a dual boot alongside Vista. I shrunk the Vista partition and installed Ubuntu. Vista loads fine from the GRUB bootloader. When I hit "ubuntu 7.10" though it simply goes to a black screen. Any ideas?

It might be a graphical issue, i had a similar problem when i had just installed. what size screen are you using? the defaults set the refresh rate too high for a 15" screen, try pluging in a bigger screen(if you've got one?!) and you might see something. then it's just a case of downloading the nvdia restricted drivers through the synapse manager..

EDIT: NB. instead of a bigger screen anything with a greater range of allowable refresh rates will work e.g. maybe an old CRT you have somewhere?

Indeed, could be a graphical issue...

Try booting into Ubuntu Recovery mode from the Grub menu

Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Find the monitor section and delete all the lines for bigger res' than 800x600.. Save and reboot; should then at least try and boot at 800x600.

Jamie.
