Hey,

Does anyone know if there is a way to get Ubuntu Netbook Remix onto the ps3? I know you can get normal Ubuntu but the netbook edition is so much more easier on the eyes and i like the web 2.0 type look about it.

Links to guides appreciated

Yes Firmware 3.21 or something removed install other O/S.

so, unless you can find a PS3 that hasn't been firmwared that hasn't removed the option, not much chance of putting Linux on one now.

Sony reckoned it was to prevent hacking and copy protection, shame it didn't work eh?

I am kind of a gaming newbie, i have just been researching it to help my son out, you can now play back up games?!!!!

That i would like, i hate forking out so much for the games hehehe

Erm, backup games? xbox360 allows you to install the games to HD but you need the DVD still.

PS3 has install to HD option for some games, but playing backup games isn't possible. You can't copy the PS3's game blu ray disc to play the game on another system without buying the game.. Anyhow, that's illegal.

Yep, how nice of Sony to advertise the ability as a feature of the PS3 and then remove it some time later. Pretty stupid.

Tell me about it. Some were up in arms about this. however I never used the feature but those who did weren't best pleased.

Yellow Dog removed all their Lunix support and FAQ's to PS3 shortly after the firmware update. Personally I reckon Sony should never had allowed the option in the first place, it was bound to end in tears. After all, its a games console, not a PC.

Feature was nice for some, not essential and Sony finally removed it and upset many in the PS3 community.. Nice one Sony.

I do believe some people managed A part refund from amazon when it first happened. no one here but there were posts about it

Remember reading some lawsuit was actioned due to the this, but not sure whatever happened to it..

I bet Sony wished they'd never provided the install other O/S in the first place, and I'd also heard the memory for storing the firmware was also getting quite full and they need to free up something for 3D support. There was a load of reasons behind removing the option, me personally I don't miss it, and I still think it was something that should have been cut from day one..

I never understood the hate for removing PS2 support either. I had PS1 support on my PS2 and I never used it, and I bet anyone who wants to play PS2 games nowadays uses a PS2 or emulates it..

I don't - never owned a PS2, and can't be bothered to go through the hassle of emulation, but if I could plug in PS2 games to the PS3 and play, there are a fair few which I'd buy.

There are various tools that turn the PS3 into a fantastic media hub without the need for linux. If you're looking to stream from your PC, then installing PS3mediaserver, Tversity, Divx7 will allow you to stream most content over to the PS3. Windows 7 even does it without the need for extras I believe.

If you want to run things standalone, PS3 plays most formats without a problem. And if you have MKVs a quick run through MKV2vob will get them working on PS3.

I believe in easyriders setup he was doing just that with windows home server dishing out the files to it?
