After installing Win7 to replace XP, my thinkpad now automaticaly boots Win 7 now instead of using GRUB. I assume a ubuntu installer will let me get back into the ubuntu i have installed to repair it, the problem is i have tried to use unetbootin to put ubuntu on a USB stick to allow me to boot from it, but the problem is that if I have it in while i boot i get a BOOTMGR missing message.

I'm not sure if the problem is that i previously used the USB stick as a Win 7 installer and that changed some settings of USB stick or something. Does anyone know how I can get the USB stick to correctly work so that i can get back into ubuntu to set up GRUB again?

If you have another working ubuntu install you can use the USB install creation tool.

Or you could use the ultimate GRUB boot disk (CD) to fix your MBR.

I figured out the problem. I thought perhaps linux may not like being put on a NTFS USB stick, so I formated it as FAT32, used unetbootin as i did previously and this time it worked :D

Followed a few simple steps from a guide on how to use the live CD and install grub :)

I am lucky it worked out like this, as I dont have any blank CDs to create my own live CD on an actual CD, and my laptop is my only device to have linux installed on it so i cant use any other device to make a USB install tool.
