Has anyone tried XUbuntu ? Is it just for machines with a small amount of RAM, or are there reasons to use it even where you have plenty of RAM, CPU etc ?
Does the xfce GUI restrict you in any way, is it possible to still run applications like Firefox, OpenOffice etc ?

i'm running xubuntu on my eee pc and ubuntu on my main rig. Xubuntu is indeed aimed at lower spec systems, but on a decent rig, i don't expect you would see much difference between a base isntall of ubuntu and xubuntu.

I haven't found the xfce gui restrictive at all. i haven't had any trouble running any programs

I wouldn't get hung up on speed issues on a modern machine, pick the desktop environment that will help you be more productive.

LXDE is another D.E (Desktop Environment) worth considering, especially on an older machine. even more so if your really used to XP look.

Thanks for the replies. I guess Ubuntu is more well known and supported in the community, so I'll try that first, and as long as it runs well, stick with it.

It's faster on highh power machines too. But I use it for its simplicity, you never spend hours trawling through options to make stuff work, usually because it doesn't have what you're trying to configure, yet you never seem to miss any of it.

It comes with Firefox, Abiword, and Gnumeric by default.
