Hi all, before I get into this I need you to know that I know very very little bout Linux and about all I know how to do with this laptop is get into recovery mode, which I reckon is what I'm going to need to do.

Anyway, my friend just bought a used Portege with Ubuntu on it, and after managing to circumvent the password, he went in and changed the username/password using the settings in the OS itself.

What he then did, rather idiotically, is change his home directory to /home/<his username> - he thought this was just a customisation thing as opposed to something important, and that it wouldn't actually make any difference to anything; clearly he was wrong and now he can't get in using ANY of the session options (including failsafes).

Reinstalling the OS isn't an option right now on account of it not having a CD drive, what I was hoping to do is to change the home directory back to what it was before he started fiddling (handily, I wrote it down while I was working on it)- is there any way to accomplish this via recovery mode?

Cheers!

Bios on this thing doesn't support booting from much at all, so no.

There must be a way to change the home directory? I get an error saying his new one doesnt exist, suggesting there MUST be some way in to change it?
