Firstly HELLO Linux community!

I'm a long time windows user, but i have often used open source software and seen the benefits of its well, open-ness! And also i have followed Linux' progression over the years, and i know that it has a lot of powerful and advantages over gates' OS.

I have been using ubuntu, and I must say that generally I am very impressed! But one thing, Ubuntu's theme is DIRE, so ive changed quite a bit. Including geting the compwiz settings manager, and installing the "emerald theme manager". But the new theme(s) i have installed go(es) after i restart, and even when its about it doesnt seem to really change a lot of things other than just the top of the windows, all of them menus and scroll bars still have Ubuntus Sketchy browny ucky crappy colours!

What am i doing Wrong! please help me! (keep me sweet otherwise i feel ill slip back to win32 :(

Cheers

SS

What exactly are you changing? The GTK or Metacity theme? Where are you getting these themes from?

Edit - re read it...

Emerald theme need you to start with 'metacity --replace' and they only change the top bar

To change buttons/scrollbars etc...

system --> preferences --> Appearance
Theme tab
(optional advanced button)

Get more gtk themes from gnome-look.org

Ah I see, i knew i needed a different icon theme, i guess this GTK theme changes all the scrollbars and menus etc? Great now I have to find a matching theme!

It still doesn't explain why the theme disappears when i restart, unless I'm to put "emerald --replace" into some kind of startup script?

This and getting an additional GTK? theme all seems a bit complex to change the theme!

There are various ways to change themes. Personally, I think the easiest way is to use System > Preferences > Appearance. All you need to do is go over to www.gnome-look.org download a theme package (like this one) and then use the GUI to add the theme. Sometimes you need to also download the icons that match the set, but they're added in the same way and it takes only a few seconds.

The Emerald way of theming is a bit clunkier, but there's no reason why you have to do it that way. The GTK/Metacity themes and Compiz work just as well and look just as good.

the compiz fusion icon (in the repos) will handle any problems you are having with application on boot and switching between things.

If any of you are interested in changing just the icons in ubuntu, take a look at gnome-colors http://code.google.com/p/gnome-colors/

I believe that the blue theme was used in ubuntu 8.10 and below but is no longer included in 9.04, this was how I came across these themes :p. Also I think the green theme is one of the themes available in mint.

To install the themes is easy. Unzip all the themes then when you are customizing a theme in the appearance menu simply drag one of the single zipped themes into the icons window.

Also while your there take a look at arc-colors, its a very nice login screen! Personally I think the new login for 9.04 is poop. It can be added from administration>login window and in the local tab.

Edit:

Found this nice article on ubuntu themes on digg:

http://www.unixmen.com/linux-distributions/ubuntu/265-great-themes-for-ubuntu-904-jaunty-jackalope

265 themes in the repo :D
