Hello all i'm a first time user of ubuntu about 2 days now but having a problem with websites where text doesn't look as clear as it should

Have installed windows fonts via the terminal where i ran
sudo apt-get install -y msttcorefonts

which downloaded and installed the fonts but wondered do i need to change any settings anywhere ie in firefox, opera or a ubuntu setting

You can change the default fonts. In firefox it's in Options -> Content.

You can also change the font rendering options in Appearance.

You can also open up System >Preferences >Appearance - Font tab and click "Sub pixel smoothing"

You should recognize that you won't get the fonts to look exactly like you're used to them looking in Windows without a ton of work, right? Just like on the Mac you're dealing with different fonts and font renderers. Some differences are better sorted by accepting that that's the nature of the very different system with which you're working.

I like to crank up smoothing as much as possible. I like big, bold, fuzzy fonts on my Macs and Linux systems.
