Hiya,
If it required a kernel recompile in Warty/ Hoary, then I'm afraid it'll almost certainly require a kernel recompile in Breezy. If you post a link to the howto, then we can write some complete n00b friendly instructions, and all you should really need is a little time for the compile to run and a basic understanding of how to type into the terminal
Seriously though, a kernel recompile is one of the easiest things to do under Linux when you know how, simply because it doesn't depend on anything else, and is far less likely to have 'issues'.
There is a link at the bottom to a Fedora 3 guide which is very detailed and easy to follow but I don't know how much of that, if any, applies to Debian based Ubuntu.
I did dabble with Slackware once but that was very many years ago and I've forgotton most of the commands
After years of experience with DOS and Windows, it sucks to be a complete n00b again
I don't think you will have to recompile your kernel for that mate. Most generic kernels come with just about everything compiled as a module so you should already have the modules you need. If I were you I would try downloading the software and compiling it following the instructions on that page - if you have the modules it should work fine - if it doesn't work or you get configure or make errors chances are you WILL need a kernel recompile.
EDIT: you need to be root to run make install, I'm not 100% on this cos I have never used sudo (which ubuntu uses) but I think you would just do
./configure && make
