Ubuntu Woes

Hmm.
Defrag again.
Run a disk check in windows.
Then try again. Reduce the size so you have (if theres the space), at least 10Gb spare on the windows drive, AFTER the resizing to make a linux partition.

OK will do. By the way, I am setting it so I will have 26gb or so left on windows. Surely this is ok.

PS: BoomAm I have added you to msn using your profile IM address.

Should be enough.
I leave MSN online all day, but im not actually in till 5, going work in a bit, so if you msg me, im not ignoring you. :p :)

Failed again. Will I have to unmount the hd so it can resize, as i think the live cd is mounting it as i can see a 76.6gb Volume in Place -> Computer.

I found this from another forum:

You must unmount partitions before you can resize them. The other main restriction is that you can't resize partitions from the start, only from the end.

providing an entry is in /etc/fstab you can simply;

umount /dev/hda1 or
umount /mnt/windows

Even if an entry isn't in fstab, you can still use the device name though (/dev/hdaXXX).

If you want to use the GUI, you could probably right click the drive in my computer and click remove/unmount.

GET IN!
I was looking around and found the dedicated GParted Live CD. This ran absolutely fine and it hasn't nuked my XP installionation! Now I'm about to install Ubuntu! I'm now past the struggling part and am ready!

Good for you.
When you've got it all running, dont forget to post your desktop picture in the linux desktops thread. :)

Got it running, now gotta go through and try to get this modem going. The installionation was so easy, as I was uncertain when I had to manually edit partition table, but when I click on it, I understood it fully and managed to create everything sucessfully, especially using the right format for the swap partition. I'm also glad that the boot loader didnt **** up and xp still works perfectly and the resize was successful. Will post once I got everything set up.

Why hello! Speaking from the foreign world of Linux! Its great, I've managed to get internet sorted and running updates now.
