how do i get live cd to work and then install linux if it doesnt even run ?

the iso contains autorun.inf which contains

[autorun]
open=start.exe
icon=ubuntu.ico

any ideas ??

also what do i need to keep my windows xp partiition ?, and use dual boot ?

is it,

windows fat 32 /home ubuntu

???

You sure you burnt the iso properly and don't just have the iso on disk? You didn't extract the files from the iso and burn them to disc separately did you?

Sounds liek you just copied to iso onto the cd - sorry iof this states the obvious but you'll need to burn the image using say nero or poweriso

XP burner won;t burn an image

Sounds like the windows installer ran as an update rather than a virgin install.

ok its installing now, didnt have much clue what to do with the partitions so i left the windows one, created an ext after it called / , and a 1gb swap file.

grub is being installed on hda0, not sure if thats right.

if it messes up ill just delete everything and install ubuntu only....

its all installed and runs remarkebly fast even on a lowly 1.8ghz pentium M!

installed and setup about 50 apps in the time i would have done 5 in windoze.

only thing is sound doesnt work, and it wont play movies in firefox, only flash (and yeh ive installed totem etc) :(

weeeeeeeeee :D
