Ubunutu -> Kubuntu problem

I have attempted to change to Kubuntu from my Ubuntu install using
sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
, but seem to have a problem. It still looks like the Gnome install I had before. Additionally, my Compiz effects (expo, cube etc) are no longer working and I can't turn them back on.

Any ideas? Thanks!

EDIT: Also, rather oddly, I no longer have an option to shut down or to restart in the quit menu!!!

When you restart the machine you are presented with the login screen, GDM. At the bottom you should see a button called Sessions. Click that and use it to select KDE rather than Gnome. Once you do that it should load into the KDE desktop and you'll still always have the option of going back to Gnome, setting either as default.

Done it and it all works, cheers :)

Do you know if you can get Compiz running in KDE?

EDIT: Also, now I have chosen KDE will it default to KDE each time I boot up, or will I have to select it at login each time?

I'm a bumbling idiot when it comes to KDE in the last three or so years. I know that KDE4 has some built-in Compiz-like functionality but I don 't know much more. Somebody else will definitely know more than me. :)

Fair enough mate, cheers for the help :D

Had a gander around on the interweb and I will give it a try!

EDIT: All working;for some reason KDE doesn't like having virtual desktops-instead, you have to have 4 horizontal desktops and enable rotate cube to have any "virtual" desktops at all.

EDIT (again!): Grr, another problem, I assume it is desktop related! I have no title bar at the top of any of my windows (the bar with the window name and minimize, maximise, close buttons etc). Any ideas why?

Because it's KDE !!
Not sure if you can add extra bars in KDE, I suspect you can.. but default install only gives the bottom bar.

Heh, i mean the bar that appears at the top of ever window (for example this one says "Overclockers UK Forums-Reply to Topic-Opera".)

I have it sorted anyway, for some reason every time I use the advanced desktop settings manager it gets rid of the title bar-I have to reboot for it to reappear. Not a major problem though!

I don't use ubuntu so don't quote me (!), but there's likely a compiz-fusion-kde package or something, as most distros split the compiz fusion package up so that kde users don't have to install the gnome stuff and vice versa.

If it's anything like KDM, then it will choose the last used WM

KDE does have virtual desktops - right click on desktop, configure desktops, multiple desktops.

Can't help you on that one, I'm afraid!

KDE is actually far more configurable than Gnome ;)

All up and running nicely except the title bar problem-as I said, it vanishes as soon as you open the advanced desktop settings manager, but is fine again after re-booting, so I'm not too fussed. Thanks for all the help guys!
