Hi

installed ubuntu yesterday, im a bit of a linux n00b. i managed to get it installed but i think ive made the partitions wrong. basically its one big drive (80gb) and a 512 share.

now linux works fine, but i want xp on as well.

when im using qtparted i dont have an option to create a partition. will i be able to do it now that i have one big partition?

cheers in advance

please note, i may be talking **** :p

To be honest, you'll be better off installing Windows first and then putting Linux on a different partition afterwards. You could do it the other way round, but the problem you'll have is that Windows will install its own bootloader which won't recognise Linux - you'd have to re-install a Linux bootloader (LILO or Grub, take your pick) after you've installed Windows.

As you've only just installed Ubuntu, I guess you've not done that much configuring of it, so I'd suggest reformatting it completely when you install Windows, then once that's finished use a partitioning tool (Partition Magic, Ranish partition Manager, etc...) to create 2 partitions that Linux will use*.

Next, install Ubuntu and select the manual partitioning so it doesn't remove the Windows partition, and tell it to use the 2 partitions you created earlier.

Hope that helps.

*as a rule of thumb, create the swap partition as twice the amount of RAM on your PC, and the remainder as the root partition.

yes cheers mate.

installed windows, but im going to download a new ubuntu live dvd.

ive currently got a cd version from the website but i cant get the install to run properly. dont know what im doing wrong. the only way i can get it to install is booting from the cd and then selecting the install icon on the desktop, which is very slow and i couldnt do much with the partitions which is why i ended up telling it to use the whole drive. it was the only thing that would work.

i had previously installed windows with the partitions set up.

what am i doing wrong, or do i simply have the wrong cd?

If I remember correctly, ubuntu has dropped the option of installing the os straight from the cd. You now install via the desktop icon which is a serious pain on slower machines as it takes hours.

Earlier version had the option of installing straight from cd, but for some moronic reason they have dropped this.

can anyone confirm this. as i'll not bother with the dvd download if its the same as the cd

so much easier to install it with that cd. all working fine now :)
Cool, I had issues before that were only fixed by using the alternate cd so glad it worked for you too :)
