I've got all my offers in for uni in September and I know which uni I want to go to. Problem is, my first choice is a higher offer than my second choice. Can I still put my first choice down as firm and second choice as insurance despite this? Cheers.

Yes you can. So your first choice might be grades BBB, and then your insurance might be something lower such as BCC. What course are you taking?

Lol, my bad. Sorry, I meant my first choice is a lower offer than my insurance. Economics at York (first choice) and Durham (second).

As far as I remember if you get the grades for your Firm choice you can't then decide to go with your insurance place.

I can't see a problem with it if you really want to go there though, if you didn't get the grades for that one you wouldn't be able to take up the insurance anyway.

Yes you can have a lower offer as your first choice. A lot of universities put their offers higher so that people put them as the firm choice, especially when people are likely to get good grades.

Yeah course you can if you really want to go there.

If you put the higher grade offer down as your firm and achieved those grades, you couldn't then choose your insurance, so you're best putting whichever you really want as your firm :)

you can
but it means you essentially dont have an insurance
because if you get the grades for your 1st you cant then change your mind

i was in a similar situation to you
i put them down in the sensible order with my actual 1st choice as my insurance
a couple of weeks later i changed my mind and rang ucas to promote it to my 1st choice, leaving me without an insurance

as it was i didnt get the grades and went through clearing anyway :p

You can do it. But bear in mind that it rules out you ever going to Durham.
It was a close call, but I've decided on York for numerous reasons. I got a better feel when I visited, there are more societies, it's higher in league tables and......

it has got its own BORIS JOHNSON APPRECIATION SOCIETY..........SOLD!

Haha :)

Bearing in mind that you'll never go to Durham, is there a third Uni which wants worse grades than York which you can put down, just so you have a useful insurance choice in case you don't get into York? Seems better than wasting the insurance choice.

I've got the same problem.
UCL gave me an ABB offer and York gave me AAB

UCL has the course I want to do, so had to check up in school if I was allowed to put my firm as UCL, even though it's offer was lower than the insurance, but kept forgetting about it :p

Thanks for clearing it up :D

For some reason though, I still haven't replied, i really should. York is higher in the league tables than UCL, but i'm pretty clear UCL is where I wanna go, so I don't really know why I haven't replied :s

Not that I would want to go to, no. I'm pretty sure I'll get the grades for York though so it shouldn't be a problem.
