* David Kaplan vs. George Roop

As requested a UFC 98 thread.

Quite an interesting card, a lot of the fights are quite hard to call.

The title fight is a strange one, in that Lyoto is such a unique fighter.

Id be gutted if it went to decision but if it did it would mean a new Light heavyweight champ.

Miller v Okami should be a good fight, but the whole card doesn't float my boat really.

Hughes should walk through Serra, if he's got anything left.

Evans v Machida could be ok, with Evans taking the win for me.

Koschek is fighting crazy amounts of fights these days this must be his fourth or fifth in like 8 months... i think he needs a little break.

Bump. It's happening this weekend so just a heads up :)

I've only been watching a couple of months. Watched the Ultimate Fighter season 8 and am currently going through season 9. There's a lot of fighters in this one from the series. Thought it was just the 1 lightweight and 1 light-heavyweight that got the contract :)

Am glad more have been signed up though as I think Soszynski is an excellent fighter :)

Updated fight card.

Main card

* Light Heavyweight Championship bout: Rashad Evans vs. Lyoto Machida
* Welterweight bout: Matt Hughes vs. Matt Serra
* Middleweight bout: Drew McFedries vs. Xavier Foupa-Pokam
* Middleweight bout: Dan Miller vs. Chael Sonnen
* Lightweight bout: Sean Sherk vs. Frank Edgar

Preliminary card

* Welterweight bout: Brock Larson vs. Chris Wilson
* Heavyweight bout: Patrick Barry vs. Tim Hague
* Lightweight bout: Phillipe Nover vs. Kyle Bradley
* Light Heavyweight bout: Krzysztof Soszynski vs. Andre Gusmao
* Welterweight bout: Yoshiyuki Yoshida vs. Brandon Wolff
* Lightweight bout: Dave Kaplan vs. George Roop

I'm not holding out too much hope for the Evans vs Machida bout. Two counter punchers who like the other guy to engage - I forsee lots of dancing and not too much action. Having said that, Machida is a class above Evans so I expect to see him take it via UD.

Hughes vs Serra - I'm hoping for a Matt Serra win, as I have a great dislike for Hughes, respect him as one of the people that made MMA what it is today, but just dont like the guy.

Be good to see Nover back in action, but I fully expect him to walk through Bradley without breaking a sweat.

UFC Undisputed comes out the day before, so my saturday night is going to be UFC Undisputed until the early hours, and then tune in for the real thing!

UFC 98 Preview

Sorry if there is already a thread for this but here we go for the matches and my picks to win:

Main Card

Champ Rashad Evans vs. Lyoto Machida (for light-heavyweight title) - Despite Machida's unorthodox style i still think evans will come through hes got such speed and adaptability not to mention greg jackson in his corner who is probably one of the best playmakers around.

Matt Hughes vs. Matt Serra - This could go either way but if it goes to the ground i cant see hughes handling serra's extremely good BJJ.

Xavier Foupa-Pokam vs. Drew McFedries - I'm honestly not sure this i think i would go with mcfedries as pokam was a replacement and may not be 100% prepared.

Dan Miller vs. Chael Sonnen - Sonnen is having to drop a hideous amount of weight(36lbs i think) and has not been that impressive as of late so to miller i think.

Frank Edgar vs. Sean Sherk - Sherk for me due as per most fights to his amazing cardio and that he has a point to prove this fight.

Preliminary Card

Brock Larson vs. Chris Wilson
Pat Barry vs. Tim Hague
Kyle Bradley vs. Phillipe Nover
Krzysztof Soszynski vs. Andre Gusmao
Brandon Wolff vs. Yoshiyuki Yoshida
David Kaplan vs. George Roop

Not gonna go into detail about the under-card but thats my picks above.

Overall it looks like a very good card to me with the UFC building up to it's centinary(sp?) event at LV, I think this is as good a card as you can hope for while keeping some really big fights for that show.

UPDATE:

The prelim fights have now all been fought and here is the results:

George Roop def. Dave Kaplan via split decision (29-28, 27-30, 30-27)

Yoshiyuki Yoshida def. Brandon Wolff via submission (guillotine choke) - Round 1, 2:24

Krzysztof Soszynski def. Andre Gusmao via TKO (strikes) - Round 1, 3:17

Kyle Bradley def. Phillipe Nover via TKO (strikes) Round 1, 1:03

Tim Hague def. Pat Barry via submission (guillotine choke) - Round 1, 1:43

Brock Larson def. Mike Pyle via submission (arm-triangle choke) - Round 1, 3:06

Good results for larson and soszynski both are on quite big winning streaks at the moment, nover again loses after such a good showing on TUF. Yoshida has a great debut after coming over from japan which will hopefully inspire more to do so.

Final Results for Main Card:

Frankie Edgar def. Sean Sherk via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Chael Sonnen def. Dan Miller via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Drew McFedries def. Xavier Foupa-Pokam via TKO (strikes) - Round 1, 0:37

Matt Hughes def. Matt Serra via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

Lyoto Machida def. Rashad Evans via TKO (strikes) - Round 2, 3:57 (to become new UFC light-heavyweight champion)

SO to sum it up every pick i made lost which is rather amusing but thats how things go sometimes...

That was an awesome card!

Stoked that the polish experiment won.

Gutted that huges won tbh but hey he did what he does.

Machida looked amazing, dominant striking.

All round great card :)

I think hughes deserved to win simply due to the second round, both the first and third could be considered draws in that both fights saw some dominance but in the second round serra lay on his back for the entire round with no active defence so to speak.

Yeah id agree.

I dont like hughes is all :D

Not a bad pay-per-view; it was a good job Rashad got knocked out when he did because the fight had all the makings of a Silva vs Leites Pt.2 which while technically pure isnt very entertaining to watch.

The Hughes vs Serra fight was very interesting, I really wish it was 5 rounds as i think it had so much more to offer and neither man was gassed.

Also really impressed with Chael Sonnen, he destroyed Miller, although i think the first round guillotine should have finished off Sonnen if he had tried a little harder to get it sunk in more.
Overall it was a 7/10 PPV, not bad but not the greatest. Its going to be miles better than the Silva vs Franklin PPV - you know its going to be dire when you have Davis vs Hardy as the 2nd main event fight *insert bored look here*. Talk about not giving the european crowds the big names!

It was a terrible early stoppage by avril lavigne, sorry yves. I don't think dana and co will mark him down too much.

I think i'd rather have the ref stop things a little early everytime becuase if they start giving in to the pressure against those decisions you can garentee the first time they let a fight go on a bit longer someone will get seriously injured with brain damage or some such. Stopping fights like that is a snap decision to protect the fighters.

Got to disagree there.

Rich Franklin Vs. Wanderlei Silva should be a interesting fight and both fighters are exciting to watch.

Cheick Kongo Vs. Cain Velasquez should be a good battle

Davis vs Hardy whilst maybe not the most technical it will be a good battle

Mike Swick Vs. Ben Saunders should also be a interesting fight

Spencer Fisher Vs. Caol Uno another good match up

oh and the return of cro cop.

all round should be a good event although i have to say im looking forward to strikeforce next week
