UFO fans, this is what you have been waiting for. No more Dosbox or other compatability problems (unless you run vista ofc) with the old old game.

http://www.ufo-extraterrestrials.com/

Release date is 1st of May.

This game looks as if it is going to pay homage to the wonderful Xcom series - sticking faithfully to the original format.

I have been looking forward to this for a long time and it has finally gone gold :)

I tried the other UFO Cenega games but they were a bit..eh..well..crap. I think it must have been the realtime battles...this game however is back to the basics of turn based :)

Here is a preview at IGN as well:

http://uk.pc.ign.com/articles/768/768012p1.html

"This April Chaos Concepts will release UFO: Extraterrestrials, a game that's so close to the original X-COM design that we're wondering when the IP's lawyers are going to start calling. It's true that games like UFO: Afterlight and Rebelstar Tactical Command cribbed some of the mechanics and basic setup from X-COM but UFO Extraterrestrials follows the original game feature by feature."

"This real time strategy/turn-based tactical blend will be available May 1st for digital download from Matrix Games (www.matrixgames.com), with a retail store release during the second week of May. Get more information on UFO: Extraterrestrials from Tri Synergy or the official game page at UFO-Extraterrestrials.com."

Enjoy!

quite enjoyed afterlight, unfortunately nothing will ever compare to apocalypse for me :(

i enjoy the real time pace of the game, it just adds that little bit of realism to the tactics for me, apocalypse really was a spectacular strategy game imo

Have been watching this for a few weeks...Terror from the Depp was one of my fav games, along with Apocalypse (I missed UFO:EU).

Not a huge fans of the newer stuff though so hoping they have re-captured the good stuff :).

i played this tons on the old Amiga , Space Hulk .. was class

Hmm turn based it says on that site. Would you call it like civ 4 or startrek birth of the federation style play? If not what would you say to describe how it plays best compared to if able.

Team based fallout,

It was an amazing game in it's time, I'll probably give it a try, but turned base doesn't fill me with confidence.

I bought fallout 2 once, theme of post apoloiptic future was interesting but i didnt care for the game style as in rpg with the interface and stuff. If it was more voiced and stuff then maybe. But i took it back to the 2nd hand shop shortly afterwords.

TBH you will only prolly like it if you played and liked the style of the original xcom/ufo games.

The graphics are basic but Im hoping it sticks to the original micropose version as much as possible - if it does this will be the game of the year :P

In the earlier games, the stratagy and base\team building was realtime while the tactical battles were turn based

I used to get too stressed out playing that. The freeze-time thing that they used combined with the fact that one marine dying could make your entire defense fall apart used to leave me shaking :)

Agreed. I was playing the original at school instead of doing homework so it brings back great memories. :D Will definitely check it out.

Ooh, that gameplay vid really does look like they are going for the looks and feel of the originals. Only thing that I would like to see is the same real-time play style that apocalypse had, as much as a loved EU and TFTD I preferred the way apocalypse handled the combat missions.

:D :)

Cant wait, and ive been waiting for this game for over 10 years. The original ufo games ruled, and this looks like we are finaly getting a true sequal

all i can say is pls dont add the real-time play style **** that apocalypse and laiter games had that ruind the games for me.

***now all we need is a MOO2 sequal and ill be in heaven***

Apocalypse allowed you to play both turn based and real time so it didnt ruin anything, I agree that the later games were not a patch on the originals but in my opinion Apocalypse was up there if not better than EU and TFTD.

Apoc had it's pros and cons.

Pros:
  • More vehicles in geoscape (city) mode
  • More weapons and research
  • Factions
  • Much improved base and personnel management

Cons:
  • No vehicles in tactical (squad) mode
  • All UFO missions shared the same map (one map per UFO type).
  • Turn-based mode wasn't all that great compared to real-time (this isn't because turn-based is inferior, but because the game wasn't exclusively turn-based and it just didn't seem to gel with the rest of the game).
  • Line-of-sight updates in real-time mode were sometimes infuriatingly slow (getting shot and not being able to shoot back).
  • Lack of terrain variety compared to UFO.
  • Ground based vehicle combat horribly bugged (road destroyed = destroyed vehicle).
  • Numerous bugs
  • Aliens looked like Barney the dinosaur and Skeletor from He-Man
