I was driving down the road earlier and noticed my wingmirror glass hanging off, so stopped and put it back in. It was at this moment my girlfriend chose to inform me that I had clipped the wingmirror of a parked car when I was forced to move out of the way for an oncoming car who was giving it some.

She said there were people getting out of it at the time, so now I am worried that I have done their wingmirror in and will be going through their insurance thus losing me my no claims (I assume they have my numberplate).

I went back down to where my girlfriend said the car was, but its gone now so I couldn't give anyone my details (so I could pay for the damage). What should I do about it? If they do contact their insurance will I be able to pay for the damages myself to avoid losing ncd (i.e. my insurance recover the costs from me)? I can't imagine it will be too expensive since it would have been a piece of wingmirror glass for a fairly old car.

I find it very difficult to believe you clipped a wing mirror whilst travelling and did not notice until your girlfriend happened to mention it to you. I've done it and had it done to me several times and it's one hell of a bang.

The glass of my mirror fell out when it happened, but it had been hanging out for several days so I just assumed it fell out and the noise was it hitting the car. Then after we'd driven a bit further down the road my girlfriend said it was due to clipping another car.

Because the car was gone when I got back I don't even know if there was any damage, it can only have been a low speed impact and since my mirror was half out anyway it wouldn't have taken much to knock it out completely.

Wing mirrors seem to be a common thing to see smashed off these days. Never used to notice it as much. I guess it's because cars are getting bigger.

Did you not notice that you clipped your mirror though?

As I mentioned above I thought the noise was it just falling out and hitting the car because itwas already lose. I was paying more attention to the git coming the otherway, as he was doing a fair old whack.
