UHS-I memory cards

Could someone just help clear this up, is it generally a given that a UHS-I sdhc card will work in any camera that supports sdhc or does it specifically have to support UHS-I?

I have a UHS-I in my 450D, and wikipedia says "UHS memory cards work best with UHS host devices".

My guess is that they are backwards compatible.
