UK Computer in USA

This might be a stupid question but apart from getting a UK to US plug adapter, do I need to worry about changing anything else or will the computer work fine in the USA?

I am moving there for a year in July and I will be needing my computer for that time.

Should be fine if its modern, but i cant tell for sure unless i know what PSU you have. Some older computers have a little red switch at the back on the power supply, it can be set to 230v or 115v, USA uses 115v.
 
Your PSU doesn't appear to have a voltage selection switch but the spec's state 90~264V (Auto Range) which would suggest to me it will switch automatically when connected to a 110~120v supply in the USA.

Thanks Savvy, thats one less thing to think about.

Also, I could do with getting a Wireless Card for when I am there. Can anyone recommend any? PCI-E if possible because I can't get to any other slots because of my gfx cards.

Finally, does anyone have any ideas on the cheapest way to get my computer to the US?

How many pieces would you like your PC to arrive in? :p

1st Choice would be hand luggage (although be prepared for the questions and xrays..)

2nd Choice would be to get a courier to deliver it. Strip out the GPU and CPU cooler to reduce strain on the motherboard and pack them separately.

Last Choice checked in baggage.. Only for the most foolhardy or those with very tough suitcases..
 
Cheapest would be as luggage :) Although, not really cheap as it could be completely destroyed. If you take the risk, pack it with lots of padding (original packing for the case best), strip out the hard drives, cooler and GPU, and make sure the PSU is well secure, or take it out.

Would still be a big risk.
 
Don't put it in checked baggage. I once took a motherboard and CPU like that to Poland was not a good sight when I opened to see i had two halves of a motherboard and I packed it really well, bubble wrap, within towels etc..... Not worth the risk!
 
fingers crossed you still have the box your case came in, the whole tower will fit inside that, will give it a lot of protection (dont forget it was shipped in that before you got it)

as everyone else said, take out the GFX card / cpu cooler, HDD's i would say to put the HDD's in the middle of a clothing suitcase for protection, or hand luggage.
 
Id find the box the case arrived in. Remove the cooler especially if its aftermarket. Also id find something to pack the case with to stop things moving. THen id ship with a courier with insurance.

This. But remove hard drive and carry it with you. If it gets lost, you don;t want this to go missing! You can always rebuild.
 
Thanks for the advice everyone. I think I'll have to get it sent via UPS or something. I have the boxes for all the components and case so that shouldnt be a problem.

Any ideas about the PCI-e wifi?

Are you sure it's worth taking the monitor? When I moved to the US i just sold mine before I left, saved the shipping, and bought another one when I arrived. Also didn't have to worry about it surviving the trip across the Atlantic.
 
haha i spotted this thread and thought.....imagine me taking my thermaltake tai chi in a suitcase to another country...it would have to be a mahoooosive suitace that haha
 
I've decided against taking my Desktop with me but I will still be taking my laptop.
Does anyone know if it is possible to get both my external hdd's and a sata hdd into one enclosure?
