Just reading this about this today what a way to go. First thought was what are the houses / buildings made out of in the states, papier-mâché?

And clearly if he was armed none of this would have happened.

another gun related story that beggars belief

https://6abc.com/academy-park-high-school-shooting-pa-pennsylvania-delaware-county/10981589/

bunch of teens get into it playing basket ball, shots are fired between each other in a nearby area. Police stationed nearby at a high school game at the entrance of a football stadium thought they were being shot at from a nearby car. Fired a dozen or so shots missing the car and into a crowd wounding multiple people and killing a kid.

“The teens got into an argument at the game and "exchanged multiple gun shots with each other" in the 900 block of Coates Street in Sharon Hill, Stollsteimer said.”

“The officers mistakenly thought they were being fired upon from the vehicle and discharged their weapon more than a dozen times. No weapon was found after a search of the vehicle and its occupants. Shockingly, no one was hit in the car. Sources say it appears the initial shots were actually fired roughly a block away.”

“The gunfire "precipitated the responsive discharge of weapons by police officers stationed near the entrance to the football stadium," the DA's office said. "This responsive gunfire by the officers wounded three bystanders and tragically killed Fanta Bility."”

how American.

RIP to the bloke.

"Stray" makes the bullet sound down on it's luck and in need of a home.

This is the chance you take when you go to the US /sarcasm (as this forum has no detector)

I remember reading of a case in the US (victim's name was Nancy McEwen) where a woman driving along a coastal road was hit in the head by a bullet and killed. The investigation concluded that it was a random shot fired from a boat a mile or more off shore. They actually identified the shooter in this one.

Now that's bad luck...

Shame she didn't have a gun to protect herself.

Always makes me wonder when you see people randomly firing into the air - Those rounds have to come down to earth somewhere.

It seems that quite a few people are injured as a result.

From Wikipedia page on "celebratory gunfire":
"Between the years 1985 and 1992, doctors at the King/Drew Medical Center in Los Angeles, California, treated some 118 people for random falling-bullet injuries. Thirty-eight of them died.[10]"

it makes me think it decided to go somewhere the gun wasn't pointing at the time it was fired.

instead of going straight it strayed off to the side or whatever direction.

maybe in the olden days that's what a stray bullet was, do guns have rifled barrels? before they did I guess a bullet that wasn't properly balanced could pull to one side if it wasn't spinning

Sounds like the intro of Magnolia!

am i the only one thinking what the hell is there to shoot at a mile off-shore?

In many cases essentially yes.

I don't know the details of this case, but it is a well known issue that a bullet discharged in one room can end up killing someone in another room or even in another building. Risky enough with any gun, but taking a wild shot with something powerful certainly isn't going to be stopped by a layer of drywall. Perhaps time to rethink using that 12 gauge shotgun, AR15, 44 Magnum, Desert Eagle etc. for home defence with family members potentially in the next room when you start blasting...

How have you all missed this part?

Those apartments on Buford Highway, Brookhaven, in North Buckhead are constructed from brick.
They stand next to I.85, around twenty miles from Hartfield-Jackson Airport.
Maybe the bullet came through an open window, how unlucky can you be?

yea which bit is mind blowing?
cops thinking they were being shot at by a car backfiring or whatever?
The fact they missed the car? or the fact they didn't see the crowd of people near the car?

spoilers ahead we are living in a movie this one

Haha my favorite film for quoting stupidity.
That tube goes in your mouth and that tube goes up your butt. After placing tubes in mouth and butt. No sorry that one goes in your mouth and the other in your butt.

Modern bullets from modern guns go through a lot of things. Windows. Most doors. Many common building materials used for walls that aren't load-bearing. Many buildings in the states have a load-bearing frame and thus don't need load-bearing walls. It's a better building method for handling earthquakes, for example. It's also much cheaper and much faster.

“The officers mistakenly thought they were being fired upon from the vehicle and discharged their weapon more than a dozen times. No weapon was found after a search of the vehicle and its occupants. Shockingly, no one was hit in the car. [..]

Not shockingly. In real world scenarios, the effective (i.e. hit what you're aiming at) distance with a handgun is extremely low. About 5 metres. Beyond that, it's usually a miss. Even with people who are far more accurate when shooting on a range.
