This petition popped up in my inbox today, alleging that British tycoons are buying the exclusive marketing rights to certain medicines, dropping the brand name and then massively increasing the price which the NHS has to pay. I confess I don't understand why they need to drop the brand name, (aren't generics supposed to be cheaper?), but this sounds eerily reminiscent of the Martin Shkreli scandal in the 'States (perhaps he gave them the idea). This was uncovered by The Times.
"In the worst case, 10mg tablets of one drug rose from 70p a packet in 2008 to £85.
Another horrifying example exposed was the cost of 50mg antidepressant doxepin increasing from £5.72 to £154 a packet in five years, and dipipanone (CORR) 10mg/cyclizine 30mg tablets from £9.57 to £353.06 a packet."
Times link (but it's behind the paywall): http://www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/news/extortionate-prices-add-260m-to-nhs-drug-bill-8mwtttwdk
Scum link (for us peons): http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepag...coons-exploit-loophole-to-jack-up-prices.html
There's no suggestion that any of this is illegal. The petition is to encourage the government to make it illegal.
