This petition popped up in my inbox today, alleging that British tycoons are buying the exclusive marketing rights to certain medicines, dropping the brand name and then massively increasing the price which the NHS has to pay. I confess I don't understand why they need to drop the brand name, (aren't generics supposed to be cheaper?), but this sounds eerily reminiscent of the Martin Shkreli scandal in the 'States (perhaps he gave them the idea). This was uncovered by The Times.

"In the worst case, 10mg tablets of one drug rose from 70p a packet in 2008 to £85.

Another horrifying example exposed was the cost of 50mg antidepressant doxepin increasing from £5.72 to £154 a packet in five years, and dipipanone (CORR) 10mg/cyclizine 30mg tablets from £9.57 to £353.06 a packet."

There's no suggestion that any of this is illegal. The petition is to encourage the government to make it illegal.
 
Is anyone surprised by this? Keeping people alive is big money, there are zero morals at the chairman's meetings in that game.
 
I fully believe that on the last days of its existence the human race will still be at war with itself both in combat and politically and ethically, etc. right to the very end, pitiful.

I just have an image in my head of 100s of years in the future people still shooting at each other, right to the last minute in conflict, as a massive incoming earth killer asteroid is visible overhead :s

Edit:

This isn't exactly the same as the Martin Shkreli situation though, is it? The drug increased in price which was then paid for by the insurance companies (and who cares about them?). If anyone couldn't afford health insurance however, he'd give them the drug for free.

So he said, is there any evidence this actually happened/is happening though? Mr Shkreli said a lot of things.
 
What i don't get is how come Martin Shkreli is actually still alive. Surely, his antics has cost the lives of many. People that are no longer able to afford the medicine and are now going to die because of his greed, surely must think, ah f. it, i may as well go blow him away since i'm going to be 6ft under soon.

Given how passionate people get over silly things in life, like going on protest over anything, and going on riot. Why not go shoot some slimy little greedy, smirky scumbag like him and go out as the peoples hero.
 
Medicine is business. It is NOT for peoples benefit.

Much like the crap that goes on with war's and private contractors doing jobs that are 100's of times (or more) bumped up. Money in people's pockets. It's going on right in front you, but it's your buddy, so hey.. that doesn't matter.

The only time people really get prosecuted, is when it suits someone elses agenda.
