I've got the Sennheiser pc350 headset and I'm still delighted with it. Paid £95 separately for it and have it twinned with a X-Fi Platinum card. It makes sense teaming the premium Asus Xonar Xense One with the 350 to get the best sound quality. The headset is collapsible for travelling (noise cancelling through comfortable padding) and equally adept with gaming, movies and music.

The soundcard is based around the £155 Asus Xonar Essence STX; being almost identical in the annual update to this card.

Only thing I'm not sure about; is this the sort of card to choose if your want out-the-box hardware-based 3D EAX gaming effects? I don't fancy installing software to get it to work through emulation such as the current Creative situation.

Trying to find more info on the packaging and bundle that comes with this. I haven't yet found any reviews with that information in though :(.

im using the 350s and a xonar D2X

best sound combination i have ever had. worth every single penny in my opinion.

looks good, a good sound card will really do good if it says what it does on the tin... or rather the package if anybody can find any lol.

as i`m partialy deaf, this will be not a hope of good to me. though £200 is a bit excessive.

still it is a good piece of kit.

I thought with Vista/Win7 this is always going to be the case, via s/w, due to the way sound now works in Windows?

And anyone know if they plan to do this card without the 'phones?

this seems like as good a place as any to ask....

...if i got a sound card, would it take the strain off my motherboard and result n slight performance gains?

On further research, found that the Asus Xonar series has solved this (shame they don't state this in the information as a highlighted feature) - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SC-001-AS

Quote: "With the introduction of Windows Vista, the whole audio architecture landscaped has been changed. This has resulted in teething problems for gamers - with the possibility of losing all surround sound or hardware accelerated Direct3D and EAX while gaming in the Windows Vista environment. To circumvent this problem, the Asus Xonar family of audio cards utilises an Asus exclusive technology - the new DS3D GX extension in the Xonar D2X driver; to provide full support for surround sound and hardware accelerated features by translating DirectX to the DS3D GX. While other solutions like OpenAL requires special installation and game support, DS3D GX doesn't. Gamers can enjoy DirectX gaming with hardware enhanced surround sound and EAX effects automatically and immediately after installation."

Shame most of the components I'm after is out of stock or overdue arrival :(

If you take a look at the final paragraph of the Bit Tech review (Same as the Custom PC Magazine one) you'll note their opinion drastically changed after finding out the real retail price.

I quote: "Note: Asus has revised its SRP from £275 to £210 since we wrote and published this review - obviously this makes the bundle a much better deal. "

As this bundle is now coming in at the shiny side of £200, it's an even better deal :)

Agreed - the Xonar D2X is epic :)

I couldn't believe the sound difference when I installed it (After using a standard on-board sound card) after being jubious on whether it really made enough difference to justify the price.

But well worth shelling out on a decent sound card for sure!

So my two questions are 1) is this better than the Essence ST + H6 board and 2) is it possible to buy without the 350s? :)
