The only way we have been able to obtain these is to buy them through a different channels, which means they are UK stock but should only be sold in PC's and hence only 1yr warranty.

This also means they are considerably cheaper as 5yr drives won't come until a few more weeks and cost in the region of £5 more.

I think 99% of us would rather pay the extra £5 and have 5 years warranty,no brainer tbh

I was under the impression that all Western Digital Black drives come with 5 year warranties. You might beable to use the warranty checker, if it shows 1 year you then e-mail WD to update the warranty to 5 years using the proof of purchase.

Did it once before and worked fine, although it was a Black Edition drive, it wasn't this one.

But honestly the price difference compaired to retailers offering 5 year warranties is so small, I couldn't justify buying from OcUK if the warranty is just 1 year long.

That is fine, we shall add this SKU when its available, but there are just as many if not more who want to save every penny possible. :)

That is fair enough, but you badly need to update the description. It states very clearly that it is "Backed by a 5-year limited warranty." and then goes on to say it has a 1 year warranty. The last bit could easily be mistaken for OcUKs legal requirement to cover for the first 12 months.

I have to say that the lack of clear warranty information on the OcUK store website is one of the few areas that lets the whole site down. It appears who ever adds the products is very "copy and paste" happy! ;)

And to think I was abotu to buy another 500gb f3 and raid0 it with my current.

Bang for buck, would it be better to get one of these as an OS drive, and then have an f3 as just a normal drive?

these drives, if they really are OEM, will fail WDs warranty checker. As do the 2.5" scorpio blue drives that you get in certain laptops, you instead get directed towards the retailer so OCUK will be handling the RMAs for these, probably.

one question, if this is the world's quickest 500gb mechanical hard drive, how would it stack up against a velociraptor.

any chance of a HDTune benchie screenshot, mr ocuk employee dude? pretty please?

Will have faster burst speeds & avg. read/write.
Will have slower random access times.

I think the raptor would be slower in general use unless lots of small files need to be read or random access is a priority (e.g. database server).

So, a typical scenario. Playing STALKER, more, waiting for STALKER to load a map, which drive? this little fella or the raptor?

Games have lots of small files, so the velociraptor would be faster since they are the fastest mechanical drives for seek times.

However, for the price/gb of this unit - it barely makes sense to go with the raptor because once the black has 'found' the file on the platter its throughput will be faster.

I don't understand why people still buy velociraptors when SSD's are available.

correct. you can get a 150gb raptor for 130 quid.

you could get a 120gb ssd for 30 quid more.

one problem.

that ssd, the Corsair, is crap. it disappears on x58 systems, it's barely faster than a raptor and i bet it wouldn't last the length of it's warranty and i dunno about you but i'm not planning on turning RMA'ing stuff into a hobby.

Doesnt on mine, is twice as fast, so what if its in warranty, and meh.

Anyway . . . :D

It might be the fastest 500Gb drive on the market, but then, there was never a 500Gb Raptor ;)
