UK multi-strip (4 sockets to 1 plug) with EU plug?

There's a few of these in places like the rainforest site that sell for around £16 etc. Considering the availability of euro plugs (or at least euro kettle leads) is there any reason I can't just cut the kettle plug end off a euro mains lead and wire it into a UK 4 way?

(To make it clear I'm talking about converting a UK 1 to 4 power strip for use in Europe).

I'm assuming this is for use somewhere in Europe, so why not just buy one out there? I'm sure you could get one as cheap as we can get them here. Or am I missing the point entirely? :)

Edit - HURP DE DURP I've made a slight arse of myself...

If I've understood correctly you want a 4 uk socket strip with 1 EU plug. i.e. to use 4 UK devices off a single EU plug?

If so why bother going to the hassle of swapping over plugs when you can just plug the UK plug into a EU adaptor and use it that way?

It's not so much the socket design, but rather the voltage. Inside Europe we all use 220 - 240 volts. Outside of Europe, then you are chatting different voltages, in which case a transformer will need to be used, regardless of the plug.

I mean, with a UK>EU adapter your phone, battery charger etc. doesn't just go pop? Isn't that symbolic enough that just whacking an adapter onto a four-gang should be good enough?

I've never had cause to do so, so don't know for certain really.

Not just Europe, almost everyone apart from the US uses 220-240! Even then the US uses 240v for some applications.

US use 110 - 120 volts. Why do they not use 220v? ... can they generate it?? Im not trying to be a smart ass, just asking. Bigger country use lower voltage for a reason.

You need a transformer mate. You are using an appliance intended for 220v - 240v on a US system which is using 110v - 120v. If you have a decent PSU then it will switch automatically.

Bit confused at this thread. Why would he need a transformer. We operate on 230 (Well 240 but new rules said we have to be 230 +- 10% I think and 240 still falls under it). And so does Europe. So what is the issue?

Also, nothing would "pop" in the USA as long as your charger was rated for 110-240v or whatever. Most chargers are.

All this talk about transformers being required...most chargers now are rated for 110-240v, just read the label on them.
