"The UK is to begin preliminary talks with Australia about the outline of a future free trade deal between them.

Officials will meet twice a year to discuss the parameters of what both sides said they hoped would be an "ambitious and comprehensive" deal."

This deal will be massive for the UK economy. We wont need the EU free market anymore. Think of the 1000's of billion this will be worth. Will make the UK the largest economy in the world.

And yet on the news this morning, the Australian trade minister is on record as saying they'll negotiate the deal with the EU before any negotiations with the UK.

Whatever. Lets hope we negotiate a good deal.

We wont need the EU free market anymore. Think of the 1000's of billion this will be worth. Will make the UK the largest economy in the world.

This is pure nonsense though.

My old man reckons that before Britain joined the EEC, all our butter used to come from Australia and it was delicious. When we joined it all got replaced with German butter which was disgusting by comparison. Looking forward to getting butter from down under again :)

And yet the Australia government says it is years away because they will want to see what the relationship with the EU is like first.

You looking at 2 years leaving gthe EU and then probably a few more years to agree a deal.

Who's the other countries? Not heard any news. Seems like the media is trying to talk up brexit when it's still a shamble.

The UK has always been a huge producer of dairy. A lot of our butter now is local and some comes from France. I am very doubtful that prior to the EEC a significant amount came from Australia, it would be pointless and expensive.

Now I have seen a lot of blame been thrown around but blaming the EEC for the taste of butter?

I'm no expert on international trade but a trade deal with a country on the other side of the planet being heralded as some huge coup as opposed to the EU seems like a special kind of stupid.

But we will meet with their government spokesman twice a year, looks like they are putting us at the front of the queue. And why will they deal with EU first when UK has 5 largest Economy in the world.

I listened to the interview with the Aussie minister this morning, and actually it's at British insistence that we can't start negotiating until we've formally left the EU, probably sensibly when you think about it. The Aussies have already spent a fair bit negotiating with the EU so naturally they're going to want to finish those first - if possible! I don't believe that the Australia-EU talks will result in an agreement, especially now Australia's biggest ally in the EU - us - won't be involved in those negotiations. The EU has a dreadful track record of finalising these sort of agreements. It wouldn't surprise me if the UK-Aus trade deal actually completes before the Aus-EU deal does.

If we're playing top trumps, Germany has the world's 4th largest economy and is in the EU.....

I hope we are front of the queue, but as well all these things they often change like the wind depending on what's convenient a the time.

What precisely do we think we will be importing and exporting from Aus?

Needs to be something pretty significant to ship it half way round the world...

The youngsters around in 2050 are saved!

Those of us around until then will live gradually turn into a whole nation of poorpers.;)

yeah will be good to be able to buy a bit of better butter, the EU butter is bitter. Crocodile sandwitches here we come.

There seems to be a lot of people who talk our economy down, other than having a vested interest (ie, international trading on the stock market), anyone else is just an idiot. Osbourne springs to mind.

It was said on the radio this morning that JP Morgan and Morgan Stanley have gone on record as saying they were wrong to say the UK would fall into recession post brexit vote. They seem to be talking the economy up now.
