Lad has been accepted for a study year in US, we're looking at flights now and was wondering if anybody had any tips for decent prices?

Flying from anywhere in England, early August.

I've looked at Skyscanner and we're looking at £1k+

One way ticket for now?

flights are "not" cheap these days - you get the "odd" cheap one here and there - but unless your/he's willing to do 2 / 3 / 4 connections, you'll be paying that sort of price you've already found.

Also depends on peak times/times you are flying etc.

Kayak/Skyscanner/Expedia to find the flights etc - then try the actual airlines themselves directly.

I've generally found KLM via somewhere like Bristol->Amsterdam->US cheap while not too nasty.

I've not done it since the pandemic though so my experience might be outdated.

yes, one way.

Seen on Kayak that there is StudentUniverse - these flights are a few £100's cheaper. Anyone heard of them or if they are good to use?

It can be cheaper flying out of anywhere but the UK, typically DUB, AMS, CDG etc due to tax savings. But the savings are usually only worthwhile for business class fares as the cost to get to those places will be greater than the saving on an economy fare.

A return fare might also be cheaper than one way. Just book the return ticket and skip the return flight.

You'll almost definitely be cheaper buying a return and just not using the return. Check Google Flights, as you can amend the 'length'.
