Hi Folks,
I run a one-man IT consultancy, primarily writing desktop and web applications and dealing with networking/security stuff. At the moment I rent a virtual domain on a server to host my company website and deal with incoming mail but it's time to move on, due to poor uptimes, low disk space allocation and some other issues. I'm looking for the following:
* Linux based with root access over ssh
* Apache/mySQL/PHP
* Python/Mailman
* Primary *and* secondary DNS management (I want to offer secondary to my customers)
* flexibility on software install - I may want to install and run a game server in the future so need to be free to compile and install stuff
Doing this stuff on a home server on my NTL cable line just won't cut it; I need close-to 100% uptimes, and decent outgoing bandwidth though not huge monthly bandwidth allocations.
I was thinking that it might be possible to avoid the cost of a dedicated server by going with a VPS (virtual private server). Prices for this seem to vary from rock bottom 8 pounds a month up to around 40. I've been looking at various companies but there's no obvious "winner".
So, do any of you have any experience with a company that does this sort of stuff and can give me a recommendation? Impartial reviews on the net seem hard to find and I trust you
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Cheers
Paul.
