The OCZ ZX Series 850W power supply is one of those hardware components that leaves you with a sense of peace--knowing that your PC is in good hands. It's solid construction and design shines under high load tests, in which it did exceptionally well. With a 100% modular design and an 80 Plus Gold rating, it is really hard not to like the OCZ ZX 850W.

MSRP for the PSU is $199.99. This is quite high for an 850w and a price like this will likely deter a lot of users. However, if you are the kind of user the puts performance above price, this is the unit for you. The only other gripe we could find (other than the price) was the 24-pin motherboard cable. It's length could be a tad longer, and it is VERY stiff and hard to bend. So, if you have a lot of sharp angles with a bottom mounted PSU, you might be in for a hard time trying it to bend the way you want.

The OCZ ZX 850W seems to be a very robust and heavy duty power supply. With up to 70A of +12V and 850W of total continuous power available, the ZX 850W should run nearly any dual-GPU configuration that it is cabled for. Being outfitted with quad PCI-E 6+2pin connections offers a good deal of flexibility that many 750W class power supplies simply don't have. And giving users the option to select from seven accessory cables, with up to 12 SATA and/or nine Molex, ensures you'll have the capability to meet all of your hardware demands.

The ZX 850W is only one of five OCZ power supplies to achieve the 80Plus Gold certification level, and the efficiency as measured against other manufacturers Gold rated units is comparable. The voltage output of the ZX 850W is decently stable, varying by less than 1% going from idle to load. Although we've tested power supplies that achieve slightly better results, we've also had many others that offer worse.

According to our research, the OCZ ZX 850W is made by Great Wall, the same OEM that manufactures the Sparkle Gold series. From all reports, including our own review, this is a good thing, as these units routinely exceed their rated wattage with ease and hold up very well even under the most demanding of loads.

As we would expect for a PSU with Gold Certification the OCZ ZX Series 850W unit is a well-built product. From the flawless paintwork on the outside to the use of branded components on the inside, there is very little to fault about the PSU. The design is also a highlight with the black/gold colour scheme working well externally and the use of items such as compact black heatsinks found on the inside. If we were being particularly picky we could say that it was a little disappointing to see that there was no MOV on the power input or that there are four PCIe power connections rather than six.

In terms of performance this model in the ZX family scores highly. The 12v, 3.3v and 5v lines are stable, never falling out with the rated specifications and the unit has no trouble delivering 850W of power. Noise levels are low and efficiency high which is to be expected on a Gold unit. Ripple results on 3.3v and 5v were good, matching units such as those built by Seasonic. The 12v ripple was also great, well within spec, though not quite up to the Seasonic standard on this front.

So that brings us to value. OCZ bundle all of the cables, screws and ties that we expect with a high end model and back the unit up with a 5-year warranty. Pricing is reasonable at $179, $10 less than the Corsair AX850 which is also a gold certified unit.

Besides the memory and SSD, OCZ has proven their ability to deliver a quality high end PSU regardless whether it is OEM or in-house R&D product. 80 Plus gold certified could be considered as the highest energy efficiency standard in the consumer industry since it is not that logical to produce a 80 Plus Platinum certified PSU due to the high product cost. If you are non-LED/lightning junkie then OCZ ZX 850W will suit you the most with its robust quality, decent performance, fully modular cabling, support up to 4 x 6+2 PCI-E and etc. Last but not least the 5 year PowerSwap program is really interesting and convinces us to get it instead from other PSU vendors.

OCZ hasn't been in the Power Supply game as long as other people, but they've been at it long enough to get a few things right. The OCZ ZX Series 850W PSU is hands-down the best power supply I've ever tested. The voltage rails are solid. The ripple and noise on this unit is incredibly low. I retested and recalibrated my scope in order to make sure it wasn't malfunctioning. It wasn't. The PSU is simply that solid.

Along with stellar performance comes good looks, a fully-modular design and extremely low noise. It worked like a champ through weeks of punishment. I have no major complaints with this unit and if I was buying a new PSU for my rig, I'd certainly consider one of these. The only downside to the whole thing is the fact that you can't hook up all SATA and Molex cables at the same time. The "features" section looks pretty amazing, but when you can only plug in 5 of 7 cables, it's not as impressive.

OCZ has put together a very solid power supply in the ZX Series. In our testing the rails were very solid, with only minor ripples way under the threshold that we like to see. The ZX Series has a 80 PLUS Gold certification, which means it will run 87% efficient at 100% load. Talking about operation the ZX Series is extremely quiet and you can barely tell that it is on, your CPU fan will be louder than this power supply.

I really like the completely modular design, this way you can connect the cables to your components first then run them to the power supply. This makes installation much easier in my opinion. Also with modular cables you only use the cables you need so you don’t have a bunch of cables sitting around inside of your case that are not needed. The overall size of the power supply is normal so you don’t have to worry about it fitting inside your case either.

The 850W ZX Series power supply sells for $179.99 at my favorite online retailer, which puts it at about the same price as other high quality 80 PLUS Gold 850W modular power supplies. Keep in mind though this power supply comes with a 5 year warranty. Overall ThinkComputers gives the OCZ ZX Series 850W Modular Power Supply a 10 out of 10 score and our Recommended Award!
