ULEZ+London = loss for some, win for some ?

now that ULEZ will be coming in to London in few months, some residents will be needing to sell/scrap or replace their cars in order to avoid horrendous daily charges...

started to keep an eye on car sales in London for older vehicles hoping to get a bargain ;)

where I live is outside of ULEZ - for the time being, and as i never owned a car in UK so there is hope i can find something older, cheap and reliable ;)

any of you affected by ULEZ ?
am I the only one trying to get smth positive out of it ? ;)
 
You can get singular vehicle exemption.
My old BMW euro3 motorcycles both meet euro4.
I would have to write to BMW to get an exemption letter at the cost of around £120
Then send this on to the DVLA.
From that point in my bike(s) would be excluded from the charge.

I live right on the border so now anytime i cross the border to pop down the road i have to pay £12.50

totally ridiculous.
 
As a Londoner I fully support this, it will reduce the number of cars on the road. The poor have been given a generous scrappage scheme, so they can’t complain. There are still quite a few old diesels pottering around, and I will enjoy the day they need to be sold.

in principle I agree with removing very old, polluting cars, but when you're getting sub-10-year-old cars needing to be scrapped, that are worth far more than £2k, it's a rather stupid implementation.

For petrol car, the age makes it an absolutely tiny proportion of "normal" cars that won't meet it, but for diesel, it's a huge number of otherwise perfectly functional cars that only don't meet the requirements because the requirements came in after they were made and everyone tweaked maps etc just to get under them. Example, an early 2013 BMW 530/535D is not ULEZ compliant, yet it's basically the same engine less a few small tweaks as the later euro 6 compliant iteration that came in a few months later - DEFINITELY not step changes different, tiny tweaks. making an 8-year-old efficient diesel basically worthless is rather daft.

Why do they 'need' to be scrapped exactly?

The scrappage scheme is entirely optional isn't it? You're still perfectly entitled to sell your 2013 530D/535D to someone who isn't affected by the London ULEZ zone, it doesn't have to get scrapped for the sake of £2,000 off a replacement car, you'd have to be a complete moron to scrap a car for £2,000 that you could sell for significantly more.

There's no way a 2013 535D is being made 'basically worthless' by the ULEZ expanding.

"scrapping" it is perhaps extreme, but certainly anyone in the south-east would be VERY unlikely to spend a chunk of change on a non-euro 6 car now, and would only buy if it was a bargain. Other cities will follow suit I'm sure. Even autotrader has a flag to tell you if a car is ULEZ compliant or not now.

I wouldn't buy a used car from a city anyway.

Cars are judged by by age and mileage, but mileage is an odd figure really.

To put that into context, the last 3 hours I've driven my car I covered about 140 miles.

3 hours driving in a city, god knows, maybe half that? Less?

Plus those city miles are higher wear on everything.

Boats clock up running hours, if they did the same for cars I think it would really be an eye opener.

reduced values because everyone has seen them being banned in certain areas, so why risk buying one in case they get banned in my local town/city too*
