"Ultimate" Monitor?

Afternoon all,

I've been eagerly awaiting the release of the Acer Predator X34 since I saw show coverage of it. I've never spent more than £120 on a monitor previously so going for this is a rather large purchase.

I was wondering what other opinions were on this behemoth!

The reason I settled on it was because I saw it as a no compromise gaming monitor.

Unfortunately I've really not had any experience of G-Sync or other high end monitors either so wondering what others experience is of similar features are?

All media coverage seems exceptionally positive but I have read many complaints about G-Sync and Acer QC is general, do I hold off for Asus? Do I pick something cheaper? I've talked myself in and out this purchase at least 6 times! :)

I recently bought a Dell U3415W (60Hz, 3440x1440), and this form factor is absolutely amazing for immersive gaming. I am personally very, very fond of 21:9 and especially 34" @ 3440x1440 - I have not used G-Sync or >60Hz refresh rate before, so I cannot comment on those, but I'd say go for it. I should probably stop chanting about how much I love this form factor too

Asus are not much better when it comes to QC if the threads on here are anything to go by, but Acer aren't exactly model students. As much as you should not have to accept dead pixels, backlight bleed, etc, vendors will try to shrug you off if you try to RMA because of it. My only advice is to purchase one and be prepared to send it back under CCR if it has any defects you can't live with.

If you can warrant the £950 cost - Go for it. If you are not used to the bells and whistles such as G-Sync and >60Hz, there's nothing wrong with saving £300 and getting yourself the Dell... You can't miss what you've never used. Or at least that's what I told myself.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

What is your full system spec?

What games do you play? do you do any image editing etc?

Thanks stulid, I literally play anything and everything, everything from current FPS to Adventure capitalist and Rocket League! Running a GTX 690 with a 3930k at the moment.

Quite aware the VRAM on the 690 may cause me issues soon so have planned to upgrade that Q1/Q2 next year. Fancying building a bit of a racing sim setup as well later next year so that is also factoring into my decision!

I think my problem is I want all the bells and whistles and feel this monitor ticks every box (providing I stay with Nvidia of course) but I always suffer from buyers regret when I see the next shiny toy come out! :)

I'm in the same position Carvid... I have taken the plunge... I wanted all the bells and whistles that this monitor provides and I am paying the premium for the privilege.

I had my doubts with Acer after the whole debacle of the XB270HU (which was another monitor I was interested in). But for all the hate and faults that were raised there is a silent majority out there who must have been happy with their purchases.

Hopefully we will be the lucky ones and receive fault free (or acceptable minors) monitors but as its already been mentioned you have the right to send it back if not entirely happy.

I am currently rocking a Zotac 980ti amp extreme which is melting my face feeding my current 1080p screen far too many frames then it knows what to do with it. My concerns before this was memory bandwidth for games like Shadows of Mordor and Watchdogs ect. Previously my GTX680 2Gb was starting to buckle at 1080p. I hope your 690 holds up better.

Ultimate + Monitor = Acer... No it's still not making much sense.

Ultimate + Monitor = Dell with extended onsite warranty bought direct from Dell over the phone.

Unfortunately "IPS" and "Ultimate Monitor" should not be in the same sentence at the moment, as the QC at the moment is rather poor for monitor with IPS panel in general regardless of the brand (Acer, Asus, LG don't make any difference).

Most of us that are losing or already lost our faith on IPS are probably waiting for and hoping a Ultrawide 34/35" 3440 res VA panel monitor will be out soon (but most likely still a very long wait).

IPS seems to have got worse, or certainly particular panels anyway. I've had several IPS monitors over the years, and have friends who've owned them too, and I have not encountered anywhere near the criticism that some models seem to get these days. The fact none seem to be using ATW Polarizers certainly doesn't help, as they have been proven to significantly reduce IPS glow. Either way, there must be something going on in the production/design process which is causing this, because there's no doubt monitors are going backwards in certain areas. I remember I had a very expensive Eizo IPS about 5-6 years ago and it was AMAZING (albeit only 1080p), wish I still had it (sold it some time ago), as I reckon it would beat most of the newer models available today.

TBH a lot of what think are ISP screens, and point and "say look at that crappy IPS screen" is not actually a reall ISP screen.

The Acer in the OP is AHVA. We might as well just call everything a TFT again...:p

But yeah I agree a lot of the so called "enthusiast" monitor manufactures are selling some really appalling crap, backed up by even worse customer service, that ten years ago would have been laughed at. But retailers keep pedalling this rubbish and people seem to keep buying it.
