Hi,

Does anyone know, if I get Windows 7 Professional through the 'Ultimate Steal' student offer do I need a previous install of windows to upgrade from. Or can I just install it on a brand spanking new machine?

The ultimate steal site implies the home premium version is an upgrade, and for professional you need to do a clean install which seems to answer my question, but thought I'd ask if anyone knows for sure!

From a similar experience with Vista, the clean install is one of the 2 install options when you run the upgrade setup. It just means erase the previous install and install a clean version with no upgraded settings etc. It does not mean you can install on a new clean machine though there were workarounds for Vista, that arguably did not follow the EULA, that might work for W7.

TBH i'd always wipe a new pc, the amount of Junk on them nowadays is mental,

Do a fresh install, it will mean you can install straight away a 64bit os (no reason not to anymore) and also you won't have all the junk of the old os to slow it down.

I am a student and looking to get this Windows 7 offer, however I am currently running XP Home, is it possible to take advantage of this offer as I hear you cannot upgrade from XP?

You can upgrade to 7 from XP, it'll just delete the XP install first.
When Microsoft talk about upgrading vs custom install they are talking about overwriting the original OS without deleting user data vs cleaning the drive out and starting fresh.

Remember to back up your important stuff, even when upgrading.

Oh okay, so there should be an option to 'upgrade' as such but it will be a fresh install and delete all my XP settings and files? I will be sure to backup. I guess once backed up I do this through Windows by putting the CD in and autorun?
